Becoming a ring steward offers an incredible opportunity to deepen your understanding of Obedience and Rally trials while contributing to the sport you love. As a steward, you’ll gain a behind-the-scenes perspective on how judges evaluate each exercise, learn the finer details of ring procedure, and help create a smooth, enjoyable experience for competitors. It’s also a great way to meet other dog enthusiasts, stay involved between runs, and build confidence for your own trialing journey.

Join us for this free, hands-on training day designed to teach everything you need to confidently serve as a ring steward—from handling exhibitors and assisting the judge with paperwork, to tracking scores and presenting ribbons. You’ll leave with practical skills, valuable resources, and the confidence to support both judges and competitors at future events.

Morning Session: Rally Ring Stewarding
In the morning we start with Rally Obedience, where you’ll get hands-on experience with:
Actual score sheets
Common judge requests
Typical signs and course setups
Real-life ring scenarios
You’ll practice the flow of a Rally trial and learn how to anticipate what judges and handlers need to keep things running efficiently.
Afternoon Session: Obedience Ring Stewarding
Learn the ins and outs of stewarding for Obedience classes—how to assist the judge, manage score sheets, organize exhibitors, and keep the ring running smoothly. Volunteers will demonstrate key routines so you can see exactly how each role fits into a trial.
Participants will also receive a comprehensive take-home handout that includes:
A list of what stewards should bring
A clear outline of stewarding duties
Descriptions of all regular classes
Full explanations of the Open and Utility routines
This detailed resource will help you feel prepared, confident, and ready to step into the ring.
